Pontine Islands: Ponza and Ventotene

The Pontine Islands (Isole Pontine, pronounced Ee-so-lay Pon-tee-nay) are Rome’s weekend islands, 30 kilometres off the Lazio coast. Two inhabited: Ponza the tuff-cliff main island with the crescent-shaped harbour, and Ventotene the smaller, more austere Roman-exile island four hours further out. June and September are the honest months; August is Roman-holiday overload.

Three ferry routes to know.

Formia → Ponza

The fastest route and the one most Romans use. Formia train station is 40 minutes’ walk from the port; frequent trains from Rome Termini (1 hour 20). Traghetto (Vetor/Laziomar) takes 2 hours 30 at around €22.

Anzio → Ponza

Best option if you are staying in Rome, no train change needed (Anzio is a 45-minute train from Termini, direct). Runs May to September only; October to April, go via Formia.

Ponza → Ventotene

The connecting run. One departure a day, mid-morning, returns late afternoon. Ventotene needs an overnight; do not day-trip it. Formia direct to Ventotene takes 2 hours 30 at around €30.

Three practicalities that catch first-timers.

  • Book Ponza accommodation before you book the ferry. The island has 3,300 permanent residents and takes 20,000 weekenders in August. Chiaia di Luna beach access has been shut on and off since 2010 for rockfall; verify the current status before you plan the trip around it.
  • Ventotene is Roman ruins, not beaches. The island is 154 hectares. Julia the Elder was exiled here by Augustus in 2 BCE; the Villa Giulia ruins on Punta Eolo are the archaeological reason to come. The natural harbour Porto Romano is cut directly into the tuff cliff, still in use.
  • Boat-hire on Ponza beats the marked beaches. Frontone and Chiaia di Luna are the accessible beaches and both get crowded. Rent a five-metre gozzo at the port (around €150 / day) and reach the Grotte di Pilato, Cala Feola natural pools, and the Faraglioni di Lucia Rosa unphotographed.
